Adding and Correcting PlantsPosted on 10/17/2008We get feedback all the time from people suggesting corrections to plant information. We are quick to let them know that Landscapedia is an open collaboration, very much along the lines of Wikipedia, where our members can add new plants or correct information on existing ones.
Adding New Plants
Even with 34,000 plants (and counting), there are missing plants. To add those missing plants is easy. On the menu, select Plants, which will change the submenu below it. From the submenu, you can click on Submit New Plant to take you to the submission form.
We know that the submission form is huge and can be overwhelming. With over 40 fields, we try to capture the information our members have told us they want. The only way to capture all the details you want is to put it on a form. There are only three required fields: Genus, Species, Cultivar/Variety. That’s it!
As for the rest of the fields, some of them may be a little vague. That’s why behind every field name, you see [?] which takes you to the Plant Characteristics page. This page gives you an explanation of each field so you have a better understanding of what that terminology means.
When you’ve completed all the information you know, hit Submit at the bottom to save the plant to our database.
Correcting a Plant
We are fully aware that some plant information is missing or incorrect. That’s the nature of an open collaboration. I may know one piece of information. You may know a second piece of information. I put in what I know. You put in what you know. We both benefit from our collective knowledge.
To add information to a plant, simply browse to the plant page. Right below the picture is a menu. This menu gives you all the options for this plant, including Edit. Selecting Edit will take you to the plant form.
The process for editing is the same as for adding. Fill out what you know and hit Submit at the bottom of the page.
Plant Images
Oh, those plant pictures. People want to see what’s being described, and we can’t add 34,000 plant images by ourselves. So we let members upload plant pictures. We’ve been fortunate to have some pretty artistic folks taking pictures.
If you have a picture for a plant that we don’t have, go to the menu underneath the placeholder image. Select the link that says Add Image. At the top of the plant form is a an upload box for images.
Browse to your image by selecting Choose File. Then Submit your image.
We do ask that you only upload images for which you have permission. That means that the image is released for general use or you personally have taken the picture. This keeps us out of copyright trouble with the person who owns the image. Plus if they file a complaint with us, we’ll have to immediately remove your image.
