Images of Costa RicaDate(s) :: Happening Today - Sun, Mar 14Description“Images of Costa Rica,” an exhibit of stunning images by nature photographer Gregory Basco will be on display at the Missouri Botanical Garden from Jan. 8 through Mar. 14. The photographs document the exquisite natural beauty and rich biodiversity of Costa Rica. The exhibit will be displayed through Mar. 14 on the upper level of the Ridgway Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m daily and is included with Garden admission. A political scientist by training, Gregory Basco has researched environmental politics and ecotourism in Costa Rica’s conservation sector for nearly 15 years. He is also a former Missouri Botanical Garden employee, having worked in the Garden’s education division. Basco now dedicates himself full-time to photography and his Costa Rica photo tour company, Foto Verde Tours. His photographs have been published by Canon, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, and Newsweek and have appeared in numerous magazines, books, calendars, and public exhibits. Because Basco believes a good nature photograph should be captured in camera, he minimizes post-production work in the computer, limiting it to the common steps necessary for processing digital images. Costa Rica “I hope my images represent more than a simple documentation of nature,” said Basco. “I strive to capture images that are truly art and that portray to the viewer the mystery, abundance, and wonder of Costa Rica’s ecosystems, flora, and fauna. I hope I’ve succeeded, and that my passion for rainforests and the stunning biodiversity they contain shows through in the images.” The Missouri Botanical Garden conducts research in the rugged region of Mesoamerica, which is known for exceptional biological diversity. In Costa Rica, the Garden has a botanist incountry who leads a collaborative project to produce a Spanish-language manual of Costa Rican plants. “Images of Costa Rica” is included with Missouri Botanical Garden admission of $8; St. Louis City and County residents enjoy discounted admission of $4 and free admission on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until noon.
