0 Plant(s), 9 Image(s) Front yard remodel completed in mid 2008. The client was unhappy with a deteriorating upper patio area, a very tight entry and access to the front door, and a tight driveway parking arrangement. The lawn is sloped as you can see. There were brown patches due to very inconsistent precipitation rates and water ran into the street everytime it watered. They also wanted more privacy in the West side and around the upper patio area. The husband was particularly interested in creating a morning meditation spot and morning coffee table. The cross built into the gate is subtle and reflects his Christian beliefs.
Just after we had completed the demolition stage, I caught a candid picture of him (picture #5) looking at me as if to say, "Bill, I hope you know how to put this all back together".

0 Plant(s), 8 Image(s) This is a project I completed over ten years ago, hence the name. The relationship with this client was special as it some times happens and together we had a wonderful time remodeling his back yard. This project has remained one of my favorites because of the client but also I simply loved the final composition.
I was near by one day and decided to stop in and see how the project had weathered the years. Unfortunately Mr. Kearny had sold the house. However the new home owner was very excited to meet me. He loved the yard and said it was one of the reasons he and his wife decided to buy the house.
I don't have the before and after pictures anymore. So let me draw you and simple mental picture of the yard as I saw it the first time. As I walked into the yard facing West there was only an old pool with a small mound of dirt behind it and about 20 pieces of very poorly laid flagstone between it and the house. The pool pump and filter was right next to the pool on the North end and there was one pine tree in the South West corner. The yard was mostly dirt with some patches of grass here and there.
We moved the Pool equipment to the North West corner and built a sound wall around it. An independent pump draws water from the pool and pressurizes a plenum under the Ramada slab. Pipes run up inside the three front Tuscan columns and then through the beams that overhang the pool.
A note on materials; Brick are Mexican Burned Adobe and the tiles are a combination of Saltillo and Tecate. The texture difference you see in the tile pattern is achieved by installing adjacent tiles upside down. I was a little worried that the Mexican tile might deteriorate right next to the water, but apparently it hasn't been an issue.
You may notice, the new home owner has not maintained the plants or irrigation system as well as I would have liked. I am currently working on an update package for him.
